Vegas Stakes is a casino simulation game developed by Dice, co-developed by HAL Laboratory, and published by Nintendo. The game is a spiritual sequel to Vegas Dream (NES).

The player takes on the role of a protagonist which they name. They travel to Vegas with their girlfriend. They only serve as a cosmetic purpose, and are not different from each other. However, they will give the player advice while playing a casino game.

There are four casinos in the game. Some of which are based on real casinos, and others are not. Instead of the HAI Palace in Vegas Dream, there is The Hideaway, the Golden Paradise (based off the Golden Nugget), The 2020, and the Laurel Palace (based off Caesars Palace). The latter must be unlocked by winning a certain amount of money. Fortunately, the casinos serve more than a purpose than just cosmetic changes; each casino has its minimum and maximum amount of bets. The further down the list you select a casino, the higher the stakes that will be required.

Each casino has five games; Blackjack, Slot Machines, Roulette, Craps, and Poker. Like its predecessor, you will occasionally run into people that ask for money, which can either have a positive or negative effect on the player based on their decision. The main goal of the game is to get $10,000,000.

Music

Vegas Stakes features a soundtrack by famed Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae. Each casino has its own theme, but since you'll probably be playing in a casino for an extended period of time, the music can get a bit annoying after extended play. However, each song fits the mood of the casino perfectly; The Hideaway has a slow jazzy theme to accommodate the run-down casino, the Golden Paradise has a upbeat jazzy melody for its prestigious casino, The 2020 has a futuristic techno beat to it, and the Laurel Palace is a nice organ melody to match the ancient theme of the casino. All of the game's music was arranged for the SNES by Manami's then-husband Kimitaka Matsumae.

Manami either had to write the music in assembly or Music Macro Language. According to Matsumae, Kimitaka composed The 2020.

Ripping GBS music is an arduous process that is beyond the scope of this site. Most of the songs were recorded in NEZPlay VGM mod. The songs The Hideaway, The 2020, and Ending were recorded in VisualBoy Advance, as the GBS omits a sound channel in the GBS file for each of these songs.

Audio Devices

The game uses the DMG-CPU B of the Game Boy. The game uses Hiroaki Suga's sound driver.
