Title Origin Game Location

Title is played over the title screen of most ports of the game Clever & Smart.

The ZX Spectrum and MSX ports have no music at all.

Composition

Like in many spy songs, the bass is based on Peter Gunn Theme and the melody on James Bond Theme. Most arrangements also use two bars of the German children song Hänschen klein.

The C64 arrangement is the longest, most melodic and not too repetitive. It features a siren at 1:34.11 and 3:09.10.

The driver is from Soundmonitor. The actual game was programmed by Christian Stredicke, who had already written an abstract arcade game with other children songs.

The song was recorded from the title screen on a PAL C64C with an 8580 R5 4091, but sounds the same on every SID revision.

The Atari ST arrangement sounds closest to the Amstrad CPC one, only more bouncy. Both sound somewhat rush and squashed. Both even forget to initialize a few variables, hence the first bass note may be too short.

The game uses two drivers: The first one houses the notes, converts them to frequencies, and outputs those to the second driver, which puts a vibrato on voice B, a slide-down on voice C, and outputs everything to the YM2149F. The actual game was programmed by Christian Rduch.

The song was recorded from the title screen in Hatari v2.1.0.

The Amstrad CPC arrangement sounds closest to the Atari ST one, only harsher. Both sound somewhat rush and squashed. Both even forget to initialize a few variables, hence the first bass note trills a bit.

The driver implements rudimentary vibrato and envelopes. The actual game was programmed by Andreas Reimer.

The song was recorded from the title screen in WinAPE Version 2.0 Beta 2.

The Amiga arrangement sounds most different and polished. Instead of children songs, it features DTMF tones and a recording of Kein Anschluß unter dieser Nummer, the German equivalent of Your call cannot be completed as dialed.

It was recorded from the title screen in WinUAE 4.3.0 with fastest possible CPU emulation, as with the normal 7 Mhz emulation, the bass note at 1:59.37 was skipped. How it sounds on real Amigas as of January 1988 is not known yet.
