Theme is a blues instrumental unique to Buddy Bubble (C64).

Title

Theme was made up by the VGMPF. Thomas Martin should be asked for an official title.

Composition

The instrumental consists of two sections:

  1. 12/8 time, a bass on a sawtooth wave, and two channels of noise that are altogether played like toms, cymbals, and closed hi-hats.
  2. 4/4 time, a bass on a 13% pulse wave, another drum, and a melody on a 14% pulse wave and low-pass filter.

Martin laboriously typed the notes into Background Music Editor, which tunes them at 424 Hz. Since that software does not support instrument changes in midsong, Martin arranged each section as a separate song file, and somebody modified the Background Music Player to play both files in a loop.

The melody sounds different on every machine because it uses the SID chip's unstable filter. For recording, Buddy Bubble was launched:

  1. in VICE 3.10 with C64 PAL and a bias of -1170, where the filter is noticeable and arguably sounds best.

Recordings for 8580 and other biases can be made if found common and different enough.
