Tanigawa Kouji no Shougi Shinan is a shogi simulation game developed by Systemsoft and published by Pony Canyon. The player goes up against (a computerized version of) the master shogi player Koji Tanigawa. There are three different skill levels of difficulty; Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.
Shogi is the Japanese equivalent to the board game chess; players move their pieces around the board in an attempt to put the opponent's King in checkmate. Each type of piece has different moves, and, depending on the piece, can move all sorts of directions like vertical, horizontal, diagonal, or even an L-shape. However, shogi has a few twists from chess. For example, pieces that reach the opponent's space, rather than the opposite end of the board can be promoted. Also, unlike chess, each piece has its own promotional version of itself with its own movement pattern.
The game was noted for being one of (if not) the first games that featured and allowed you to play against a professional. Other than that, it's a 1986 release on the MSX, so not much is to be expected. The customizations are minimal, as well as the graphics and sound. However, despite this, the game would go on to spawn two sequels.

Music
Like the graphics, the game offers very little in the audio department. There is a title track that loops every seven songs, as well as a couple jingles that play when you either lose or win the game. The latter two were used in the game's sequel. It is likely whoever programmed the game was also expected to create the graphics and audio as well.

The game has no credits. Even beating Tanigawa on the advanced level of difficulty ends up sending you back to the title screen. The back of the box credits the game's development (or "Computer Design") to a company called "Systemsoft". It is currently unknown if this is the same company as SystemSoft Alpha Corporation, or if this is a separate company with an identical name.
