Super Mario Bros. 3 is a platforming game developed and published by Nintendo for the NES.

Bowser has once again kidnapped Princess Peach, and it's up to Mario and Luigi to save her. The players must traverse through 8 worlds full of deadly traps and enemies until they reach Bowser. At the end of each world, the player boards an airship which houses one of the 7 Koopa Kids. After defeating them, the player gets a rod which was stolen from the king of the land from whichever world the player is at, and transforms them back to human form.

The game has the familiar fire flower upgrade, as well as several other powerups. These include a raccoon leaf, which gives Mario the ability to fly, the Tanuki suit, which gives Mario the ability to not only fly, but also turn invincible for a brief period of time, the frog outfit, which allows Mario to swim easier in the underwater segments, and the Hammer Bros. outfit, which allows Mario to throw hammers at enemies. In addition to these, there are also many miscellaneous items Mario can use to help him on his adventure; he can use Jugem's Cloud to skip a level, a musicbox to make the Hammer Bros. on the map go to sleep, as well as a hammer to break roadblocks on the map to access shortcuts and other goodies.

On top of the improved gameplay, there are also several minigames that have been added in order to gain extra lives and items. Some of these can be seen in the map, and others have to be "triggered" in order to play them. These include a game where the player must matchup 3 large images to create a full picture, a memory card game, a mushroom house where the player selects one of 3 chests with an item in it, and a ship where the player can rack up on coins. After beating a normal stage, the player gets a card. If the player can manage to beat 3 normal levels and earn 3 of the same cards, they will gain many extra lives.

The game was developed by a handful of Nintendo's R&D4 division staff; the game was produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, directed and designed by Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, programmed by Toshihiko Nakago, graphics by Tezuka, Hideki Konno, Hiroyuki Kimura, and music and sound effects by Koji Kondo.

The game was widely acclaimed, and many have even called it the best games on the NES, as well as others saying it was the best game in the entire Super Mario Bros. series. The game was also known for its appearance in the movie The Wizard.

Music

Super Mario Bros. 3 features a soundtrack just as iconic as the previous two installments. Koji Kondo returned to compose the game's soundtrack. Like the previous game, the soundtrack makes use of the DPCM channel for enhanced percussion. Kondo also brings a huge presence of genres to the soundtrack, most notably reggae; unusual as it's not part of Koji's typical style. Each world has its own theme to compliment the world's unique style; the desert theme has an Egyptian-sounding loop, the ice land has high-pitched pianos, and world 8 has a sinister and ominous presence.

There are two main stage themes, as well for a separate theme when you are underwater and one when you're underground. Kondo explained that he had a difficult time with the game's music because, even back then, the music to the original game was so iconic, it was hard for him to top his work in the previous installments.

To create music and sound effects, Koji wrote the music in his own audio driver in assembly macros.

The part at 1:02 during the Ending Theme sounds identical to "Kokomo" by The Beach Boys. However, this game was released before that song.
