Composer Johann Sebastian Bach
Released 1730-??-?? c.
Title Origin Official

Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068 is an orchestral suite composed by Johann Sebastian Bach no later than 1730.

This song has long since been in the public domain.

Title

The second movement, Air, is often called Air on the G string, even though only an C major arrangement by August Wilhelmj was christened so.

Composition

The suite consists of five movements, but so far, only the second movement, Air, has been identified in video games.

The first six bars are repeated with different endings, the other 12 bars with identical endings. The four staves are composed in D major and common time:

  1. Violin I
  2. Violin II (excluded from 2-track arrangements)
  3. Viola (excluded from 3-track arrangements)
  4. Basso continuo

After loading, Air starts every time the menu appears, the attract mode starts, or you start a game. It hangs for the moment you are iced or de-ice your last room. Upon game-over, it stops.

Somebody arranged the first six bars, with every third loop being a variation. The game does not have audio credits, but due to its simplicity, HVSC attributes the music to game programmer Kevin Moughtin ever since ripping it in 2000.

Regarding the SID chip, each stave plays on a 63% pulse wave, with the first four seconds being loudest. Channel 3 is reserved for sound effects. The minimalist music driver is tuned at 424 Hz.

It sounds the same on every machine.

Loops Three times

Once you press SPACE on both manual screens, the title screen and Air load and appear until you do press a key.

Wright arranged the first six bars in four variations. During the 2nd variation, channel 2 rests.

How he input the notes is unknown. The four envelopes are set up in BBC BASIC, and the music driver is programmed in 6502 machine code. The driver is set up to play the arrangement three times, with a brief silence between loops, and complete silence after the last loop.

After the credits, the intro and Air load and appear fully. At exactly six bars, the title picture makes room for the story. At the end, a black screen waits till the arrangement chooses to finish as well.

The music driver is the same as on Sereamis (A8) from the same publisher. Source code leftovers suggest that its arrangements were typed in something like BASIC.

After the credits, the intro and Air load and appear fully. It also plays once in adventure number 25, namely between the first question and your answer.

The continuo sounds different on every machine because it uses the SID chip's unstable low-pass filter. In the rip, the intro and adventure 25 are tracks 1 and 5, respectively.

Air loops over the entire game, but briefly hangs while the screen changes. They are tuned at 434 Hz.

Serafini arranged the first 12 bars. At least two notes of violin II are off.

The violins sound different on every machine because they use the SID chip's unstable low-pass filter.

Air plays once you are destroyed but earned a score higher than rank 9.

Turner input the first six bars in the key of C, but since his music driver was always tuned at 424 Hz, they sound closer to B.

Violin I sounds different on every machine because it uses the SID chip's unstable low-pass filter. It should be recorded:

  1. on a C64 PAL where the filter is noticeable and pleasant (and probably as intended).
  2. on a C64C PAL.

In the rip, it is track 6.

Air exists in versions 1.1 and 1.2 only. It plays in the room with the jellyfish.

Wolnikowski arranged the first six bars in a loop and added unique triplets and trills on violin I (not identical to Wilhelmj's), all in GoatTracker v2.73.

The continuo sounds different on every machine because it uses the SID chip's unstable low-pass filter and mixed triangle and pulse wave. The game recommends listening on a C64C PAL. In the rip, it is track 9.
