Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is a multi-player 3D space dog-fighter, so unlike it's processors, there isn't a nice story mode to follow. However, it does feature a new game engine with higher resolution graphics. Unfortunately, it didn't take into account later technology, so the resolution is fixed at 640x480. The multiplayer lets you finally figure out which one of your friends is the best fighter pilot in your group, but other than that the game doesn't have much going for it.

The Balance of Power expansion game uses identical music.

The game designers chose CD audio for the game, and the soundtrack is taken directly from the movies. You get to hear the full Star Wars Theme and Imperial March will all the power of a full orchestra backing it up. While the quality is great, the music seems a little stock by this point, and it would have been nice to hear some custom tracks. Also, while the music is perfect for the passive role of movie watcher, it's a little distracting when you're actively flying an X-wing. Also, there are only 7 tracks to work with, and being CD audio, they aren't able to dynamically shift with the mood of the game.
