Squeeze is an English rock band started by guitarist/singer/songwriter Glenn Tilbrook. The band is known for several hit songs including Tempted, Up the Junction, Cool for Cats, and Hourglass. The band was originally formed when Glenn stole money out of his mother's purse to put an ad in a sweetshop window, advertising for a guitarist wanted for a touring band. However, Glenn had not actually had a band prepared yet, but Chris Difford was the only person to respond to the ad. Since then, Difford and Tilbrook have become the primary singer/songwriters of the group. According to the duo, Chris started out writing the lyrics while Glenn would adapt his lyrics into music. However, now, both artists either do both or do the opposite of what they primarily wrote, plus what the originally wrote as well.
In 1982, the band broke up following several issues with the band including touring and disagreements between Difford and Tilbrook. However, in 1984, the two musicians collaborated on an album as Difford & Tilbrook, and by 1985, Squeeze was reborn. However, the band once again broke up in 1999 before touring again in 2007, and reformed in 2010 when they released their album Spot the Difference, and continue to perform and tour today. However, besides the two lead singers/songwriters, all of the original band members are different.
Because the band began its popularity during the new wave age of music, most people label the band as a new wave band. However, both Difford and Tilbrook have expressed disagreement with this, as their musical style doesn't fit the new wave style, and that the band was influenced by bands such as The Kinks and The Beatles. Some have even called Difford and Tilbrook the next Lennon and McCartney.
