Snake's Revenge (NES)

Snake's Revenge is the sequel to Metal Gear (NES). The plot is largely a re-tread of the first game, with a mysterious terrorist organization having mass-produced the original Metal Gear tank, and also produced a prototype of an upgraded, far deadlier model. Solid Snake, now the leader of Foxhound following the exposure of Big Boss's treachery and his apparent death, is sent in with his fellow operatives John Turner and Nick Myer with the mission of stopping Metal Gear once again.
Like the NES version of the first game, it was developed without the knowledge of series creator Hideo Kojima, and as such was ignored when Kojima created Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX) later that year. This time around however, what we get is actually a very solid effort with much more polished gameplay, graphics, and sound. It can actually be seen as a (very) early precursor of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3), with the action taking place in a series of locations around the globe, instead of just focusing on infiltrating one particular location. The main quirk of this game is its side-scrolling action stages, which at time feel more like something you'd expect to see in a Contra game, albeit there are at least concessions to the series' stealth mechanics.

Music
Like the rest of the game, the soundtrack to Snake's Revenge is much more polished than that of the first NES game - and considering the soundtrack was already one of the better aspects of Metal Gear's NES port, that's very good news. Tsutomu Ogura's soundtrack doesn't re-use any bits of music from either the MSX or NES versions of the first game - albeit the base infiltration theme clearly has some nods to its counterpart from the first game's MSX version - and has some memorable themes, most notably the theme that plays during the first mission in the jungle.
