Sengoku Mahjong is a video game adaptation of the board game Mahjong. It was developed and published by Hudson Soft in 1988 in Japan.

The game takes place during the Sengoku era of Japan, where the player plays against twelve historical figures from the era; Mori Terumoto (毛利輝元), Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉), Uesugi Kenshin (上杉謙信), Date Masamune (伊達政宗), Nene (ねね), Oda Nobunaga (織田信長), Yodo-dono (淀君), Takeda Shingen (武田信玄), Shimazu Yoshihisa (島津義久), Chiyo Yamauchi (一豊の妻), Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川家康), and Hojo Ujiyasu (北条氏康). The goal of the game, as explained in the game's manual, is that they (as a general) must conquer all the lands in Japan to restore peace.

There are two modes of play; Normal Mode (ノルマルモード) is a standard exhibition game where the player may play against three other opponents. Battle Mode (合戦モード) is the main story mode of the game, where the player must play against other opponents and conquer territories in Japan as they win. However, there is no save feature, which means the player has to beat the game in one sitting.

There is also the Rule Settings (ルール設定) in which the player can modify various settings of the game. The game only supports one player, so no multiplayer mode is available.

Music

Sengoku Mahjong features a soundtrack by professional musician Tomotsune Maeno. He had previously scored the music to a similar PC Engine game, Shanghai. You may recognize his work for the NES game Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom, or the TurboGrafx-16 game Neutopia. There are nine songs in total, and three in-game tunes that can be selected at any time during the player's turn. Each song has the traditional Japanese aura one would expect to hear in ancient Japan. Among the nine songs are a few jingles and non-looping songs. In fact, only the menu and in-game themes have looping music.

What's more is the personality added to the songs fitting into the ancient Japanese style of music, but in particular, the in-game tunes; Music 1 has a fast and tense feel to it, Music 2 is a more neutral-toned song, while Music 3 is a calm, relaxing feel with flutes with wondrous vibrato.

It is unknown how Maeno created music for the PC Engine, though he most likely wrote the music in some tangible form, and Hudson Soft staff implemented it into the game. Toshiaki Takimoto's name appears in other games that use the same version of Takayuki Iwabuchi's sound driver as an arranger, so he was most likely the arranger, but verification should be made. Hudson's sound engine for the PC Engine required its user to use a PC-9801 computer, writing the music in a custom Music Macro Language.

Ripping TurboGrafx-16 music is an arduous process that is beyond the scope of this site. The music was recorded using in_vgm for Winamp.

Audio Devices

The game uses the TurboGrafx-16's HuC6280. It uses Takayuki Iwabuchi's sound driver.
