The Sega CD was Sega's attempt at a CD system. The Sega CD would plug in either the side or the bottom of one's Sega Genesis/Mega Drive (depending on which model you owned). In Europe and Japan, the console is known as the Sega Mega CD, in relation to the Mega Drive.
The console had some great titles such as Sonic CD, but the console ended up failing. One of the most aggravating aspects about the console was that it required its own power adapter and video cords.
Later, the Sega CD was released as the X-Eye by JVC, and Sega themselves released the Sega CDX, which was its own console.

While the player was waiting for their Sega CD to load the game from the BIOS, the player could enjoy one of three songs. There was one song for the Mega CD which can only be heard on Japanese and European Mega CD consoles. In the USA, there were two released versions of the Sega CD, and therefore both had their own theme. The Japanese/European BIOS plays in full PCM using the RF5C164 for better digitized instruments, while the American BIOS themes use a mixture of that and the FM capability of the Genesis (YM2612).
