Pyros is an action-platformer developed by Toaplan and published by Taito in 1987. In Japan, the game was called Wardner no Mori' (The Forest of Wardner or Wardner's Woods).
A mysterious figure approaches Dover and his girlfriend, offering to take them on an adventure. After the kids oblige, the figure ends up kidnapping Dover's girlfriend, and he must rescue her.
The game takes the approach of having only a few levels, but each being brutally hard. One hit kills you (without the Magic Mantle, which adds an extra hit), enemy fire is everywhere, and even the time limit isn't too lenient. This isn't helped by one of the last stages being a maze. Throughout the stage, Dover must avoid the various tricks and traps of each area. Dispatching enemies will yield various rewards such as gold and crystal balls. The gold is used to buy upgrades between the levels.
The game was positively received by critics, though many drew comparisons to Ghosts 'N Goblins in terms of difficulty, gameplay, and even the map screen that appears between levels.
The game was later ported to the Famicom Disk System under its original title, as well as receiving a port on the Genesis called Wardner, though the latter made some changes to the original game. It has been said that NES and PC Engine versions were in development, but they were never released. It has also been said the North American arcade game received its name due to the name "Wardner" being the final boss in the Wizardry series, so the company changed it to avoid confusion.

Music
Pyros has a nice assortment of music by Osamu Ohta. Most of the music is in the genre of rock, but Ohta showcases his sophisticated musical style. For example, the track Nodoka is a nice reggae beat. Mori no Naka has a funky feel to it, and Shop is a fast-paced upbeat rock ballad. Koujou Ato sounds similar to the first stage theme in Toki (ARC). Each major section of the game has its own theme, which is nice. The downside is a few songs in the game are short repetitive loops. Atwiki.jp said, "The comical and addictive music is music to the ears." The site also mentions that Ohta was a programmer for this game.
To compose the music, Ohta wrote in Music Macro Language using Toaplan's sound driver by Masahiro Yuge. Like most Toaplan games at the time, the music is tuned approximately a ¼-step sharp.
