Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom |

Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom is the third installment of the Phantasy Star RPG series created by Sega. You play Rhys, the prince of the Orakian empire, who is about to marry a woman who mysteriously washed up on the shore months prior. However, a Layan demon steals her away. As Rhys you must make your way through monster infested lands to find her again. You start to realize odd things along the way. There are 1000-year-old cyborgs, ruined airfields, and other strange devices that detract from the medieval theme that you've come to expect. The anachronism of the world is only one of the perks to this RPG, another is the fact that you play multiple generations of characters as they have children. Although there is a bit too much mandatory grinding for levels, Phantasy Star III is a fun game and certainly great for the mid-1990s.

Although the Genesis' music chip wasn't earth-shattering, it did allow from some pretty good tunes, which Phantasy Star III took advantage of. The Opening Theme is quite memorable and the Shop music (also used in the beginning menus) is a lot of fun. The Town music is nice and melodious, and the Dungeon music, which is usually bland for most RPGs, is surprisingly awesome. The music also takes advantage of the atmosphere of the game. As you trek through the world map alone the music seems equally lonely. Then, as you pick up more party members the music becomes more upbeat. At five members it's really danceable. The combat music is pretty innovative as well. When the battle takes a turn for the worse the music becomes more dreadful, but as you pull your way to the top the music begins to cheer you on.
