Ms. Accord's Lesson
Ms. Accord's Lesson | ||||||||
|
Ms. Accord's Lesson plays during Puyo Pop Fever (or Puyo Puyo Fever in Japan)'s tutorial, which can be seen if the player lingers for long enough on the title screen.
In addition, Game Over! (which unsurprisingly plays upon receiving a game over) slightly arranges one brief section of the song.
As with the rest of the game's soundtrack, both songs were originally composed by Hideki Abe and first saw the light of day in November 2003 (when Puyo Puyo Fever (ARC) started coming out).

Title
The English title for "Ms. Accord's Lesson" comes from Puyo Puyo Fever 1&2 Soundtrack and Puyo Puyo!! Original Soundtrack. The original Japanese title (taken from the same sources) is "先生の授業ですよ," which roughly means "It's the Teacher's Lesson!"
"Game Over!" is consistently given that exact name in both English and Japanese (as "ゲームオーバー! ") in every soundtrack appearance.
Composition
"Ms. Accord's Lesson" is a bit slower-paced than most of Puyo Pop Fever's soundtrack, though it's still very upbeat. Bells play the main melody in the intro before receding for the remainder of the song, intermittently sounding off in the background. However, much of the main melody uses "jingly," bell-like synths (especially the B and C sections), contributing to the tune's cheerful yet sedate feel.
The section used as the basis for "Game Over!" comes right before the B section. This version is a bit more downbeat than the original, with the main melody being slightly lowered in pitch to fit the untriumphant context it plays in. Unlike its parent song, it does not loop.

Both songs' original iterations are played via digital audio.
"Ms. Accord's Lesson" is reused verbatim in other games in the series:
- Puyo Puyo Fever 2 (on both PS2 and PSP) plays "Ms. Accord's Lesson" during menus where Accord herself appears, including when the player starts the game for the first time or chooses a character and course for single-player mode.
- In Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary for the 3DS, PSP, and Wii, the song becomes Ms. Accord's personal theme.
- Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 lets the player choose the song during free play matches.
Meanwhile, "Game Over!" retains its position as the game over theme for the console versions of the next four games (Fever 2, 15th Anniversary, Puyo Puyo 7, and Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary). Even Puyo Puyo Tetris and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, which do not have a proper game over screen, keep the song in their files (with the latter game letting the player listen to it in the sound test, as song #24). None of these games alter the song in any way.

The Game Boy Advance port of Puyo Pop Fever naturally reworks every song to work with the system's limitations. "Ms. Accord's Lesson" is not hit too hard by these constraints, though many of its bell samples are replaced with more "basic" synthesized notes -- however, the counter-melody right before the B section (the part heard in "Game Over!") is far more audible than in the original version.
On that note, "Game Over!" is not changed quite as much, retaining its downbeat, ever-so-slightly ethereal feel.

While the DS still primarily uses sequenced music, its port of Puyo Pop Fever has music much closer to the original arcade & console versions. "Ms. Accord's Lesson" is no exception -- when compared to the GBA version, the bell samples are back in full force. That said, it, too, features a more audible counter-melody before the B section.
"Game Over!" retains its bass line from the console versions, though the exact instrument used does not sound exactly the same.

As with the console versions of Fever 2, "Ms. Accord's Lesson" plays in menus where Accord herself shows up, while "Game Over!" plays upon choosing not to continue following a loss in single-player mode. Both games have slightly different arrangements of the song, marked by a far more prominent & punchy bass line.
This version's music is reused in later Puyo Puyo games on DS: "Game Over!" remains the game over theme in Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary (NDS), Puyo Puyo 7 (NDS), and Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary (NDS), while "Ms. Accord's Lesson" becomes Ms. Accord's theme in the lattermost game.
