Mega Man V is the fifth and final Mega Man game for the Game Boy (albeit there would later be two games based on the Mega Man X series). The story begins with Mega Man being attacked and nearly destroyed by a mysterious robot named Terra, leader of a gang of robots called the Stardroids, who launch a full-scale attack on Earth. Upgraded with a new weapon called the Mega Arm, and with the help of another robotic animal assistant, Tango the Cat, Mega Man sets out to save the world from these mysterious invaders.

While for the most part the gameplay is the same as in Mega Man IV (GB), Mega Man V breaks from the previous four games by not re-using any Robot Masters from the NES series, as well as throwing in a surprising twist with the final boss's identity (after a rather less surprising twist about the penultimate boss's identity).

Music

Mega Man V is one of only two games in the "Classic" Mega Man series (the other being Mega Man III (NES) not to feature any re-arranged music whatsoever from any prior entries. What we get is still a very good soundtrack, however; it has a darker and more downbeat quality than most Mega Man soundtracks, but still supports the fast-paced action that you'd come to expect from the series.

Much like the earlier games in the Game Boy sub-series, there are several unused songs; the first two appear to be level themes, the third an early version of the "All Stage Clear" theme, and the fourth possibly having been intended for the "New Weapon" screen. The "All Stage Clear" theme from the previous game is also present in the game's music rip, presumably having been used as a placeholder track at some point in development and not removed; for the sake of brevity, it is not included in the recording below.

Credits

There is some confusion over exactly who composed the game's music. Kouji Murata, who composed for the previous two games, has denied having worked on this game's music, and said that the composer was most likely Kinuyo Yamashita. In turn, Yamashita has said that while she remembers writing some music for the game, she was moved over to work on Mega Man: The Wily Wars (GEN) at a relatively early stage, and that as far as she remembers, Murata did most of the soundtrack himself afterwards. Regardless, the game uses Murata's sound driver and many sound effects from the previous two games.

Ripping Game Boy music is a very arduous process that is beyond the scope of this site. The soundtrack was recorded using the Game Emu Player in foobar2000.
