John Carmack is an American video game developer and programmer. He is best known as one of the founders of id Software, and programmed several of their games such as Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Quake, and Doom. He made innovations to video game development, including his reverse algorithm for shadow volumes. In 2013, Carmack left id Software and became CTO at Oculus VR, working there until the end of 2022, when he left the video game industry to focus on his new start-up Keen Technologies, which focuses on AI-assisted computing.
