GYM (Genesis YM2612) files contain logged music data from Genesis games. The Genesis emulator Genecyst popularized the format by allowing users to log the data that was sent to to the YM2612 sound chip into a GYM file. The data could then be played back as music. While this recorded "notes" of the music, it did not record the "instruments", and therefore could not produce proper audio playback. The later format VGM properly records all of the sound information, making GYM obsolete.
