Genesis Sound Record was meant to replace the older, more bulky, GYM format for storing Genesis music. GSR is capable of storing the DAC samples efficiently and producing much more accurate sound for Genesis playback. However, the more popular VGM supports the format as well, and since it has a much larger base, GSR never took off. Instead, older VGM archives were upgraded to support the latest features.
