František Fuka is an actor, professional Czech translator and a former 8-bit musician, also known for being the founder of the FFFilm news blog and a member of the Odvážné palce radio podcast.

Fuka graduated from the Arabská gymnasium and studied for two years at ČVUT. He wasn't really interested in video games until he saw one running on an Apple II clone at an exhibition of Soviet technologies. He started borrowing his uncle's TI-58 calculator and began learning programming in 1981, back when he was 13. The first computers he owned were Challenger 1P and ZX80. In 1984, he programmed one of the very first games made for PMD-85, namely Bombardér and Housenka, which were shipped with the later releases of the computer. He also wrote several games on VIC 20, but never actually released them.

One of Fuka's favorite genres were text adventures, in particular the ones by LucasArts, although he disliked Sierra's, finding them too difficult and unforgiving.

Around 1990, a SAM Coupé was loaned to him. Because there weren't many SAM composers at the time, Fuka was frequently getting contacted by strangers asking him to make music for them.

On March 3, 2006 or earlier, Fuka remastered some of his soundtracks in FL Studio. He doesn't seem to compose music anymore, but says that he wouldn't mind making a new game sometime.

Audio Development

ZX Spectrum

Fuka said this in the Na řadě je počítač documentary:

I play it on my piano first to get the tone right and then I transcribe it into numbers on the computer. The way to do it is that C is 0 and by half-tones goes up 012345.

As for Spectrum 128, Fuka developed and used the Fuxoft AY Language and a custom format similar to AY, called FXM.

SAM Coupé

Fuka used SAMadeus.
