Chicago is an American band that was formed in 1967 by Robert Lamm (piano/vocals), Peter Cetera (piano/vocals), James Pankow (trombone), Lee Loughnane (trumpet), Walter Parazaider (woodwinds), Terry Kath (guitar/vocals), and Danny Seraphine (drums).
The band's first album, The Chicago Transit Authority, was controversial in that it was one of the first albums to feature two LPs to fit each song in the album. The record company was unsure of the idea, but the album released anyway and sold very well. Hit songs from the album include "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?", "Questions 67 & 68" and "Beginnings". The band also had hits with their second album (also released with 4 LPs) with "Make Me Smile", "Colour My World", and "Poem For The People". The band had kept producing hits for several more albums.
Unfortunately, on January 23, 1978, guitarist Terry Kath had put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger, thinking the gun wasn't actually loaded. However, there was a bullet in the chamber and Kath died instantly. The death of Kath made the rest of Chicago consider disbanding the group. However, they decided to stay and their next album Hot Streets featured guitarist Donnie Dacus. However, he did not stay in the band.
Later, Peter Cetera had wanted to make solo albums, whilst still playing with Chicago. However, the rest of the band told Cetera he could not do both, and Cetera decided to leave Chicago. He was later replaced with Jason Scheff, whose father was the bassist for Elvis Presley.
The band still performs and records albums to this day, and many of the original band members still remain. Their current guitarist is Keith Howland and Tris Imboden is their drummer.
