Castlevania: The Adventure was a game released for the Game Boy on October 27, 1989. It takes place 100 years before the events of Castlevania (NES), featuring Simon's ancestor, Christopher Belmont.
Though the game is closer in tone and design to the original than the non-linear Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES), it does make a few changes to the gameplay formula, including making use of ladders instead of stairs, removing the sub-weapons and adding a projectile to the third whip level. However, some of the other gameplay mechanics, including losing a whip level whenever Christopher is hit, not being able to attack while climbing ropes, and the sluggish game speed, proved less popular, giving this a reputation as being one of the weaker Castlevania entries.

Music
While the game may be rough around the edges in a lot of ways, the soundtrack is impressive for an early Game Boy title. All the music is original, but there are some obvious musical nods to songs from the two NES games that had been released until this point. "Darkness" for instance is heavily reminiscent of "Stalker" from the first game, "Death Fair" has some similarities to "Vampire Killer", while "Revenge" is in sections reminiscent of "Bloody Tears" from the second game.

Source verification is needed. |
While the game credits Shigeru Fukutake, Norio Hanzawa, and Hidehiro Funauchi, as per the liner notes in the Akumajou Dracula Best 2 album it appears that Hanzawa was the main composer, while Funauchi primarily handled programming, work arrangement and sound effects, though apparently composing at least some music as well. Fukutake appears to have been credited in a supervisory capacity, likely because he was the head of Konami's sound department at the time.
