Battleship is a game based on the popular board game. In the game, you place your ships on an 8x8 grid, and the opponent does likewise. The goal of the game is to hit every square that the opponent's ships are to sink them. Once a player's ships are all sunk, the game is over.

The Game Boy has some different gameplay mechanics not present in the original board game such as a smaller board, different weapons to use, and some pieces not found in the original game. The Game Boy adaptation also adds the polish of animations when attacking an enemy, as well as a soundtrack.

The game later got a re-release on the Game Boy Color, as well as spawning two sequels in Japan: Kaisen Game: Navy Blue 90 (GB), as well as Navy Blue 98 (GB).

Music

The game's soundtrack consists of seven songs; not much for a game released in 1989, but what is there is enjoyable to listen to. One can grow tired of the main stage theme, as it plays throughout each stage nonstop.

The GBS file plays the music too fast. A fix should be made, and the soundtrack re-ripped when it is available.

The music was most likely written in Z80 assembly using Junichi Saito's sound driver.

Credits

(Musical comparison; Game lacks credits.)

Both the North American and Japanese versions of the game, as well as their manuals do not have credits. However, the game uses Junichi Saito's sound driver. In addition, many of the game's tunes are in an identical style to Thunderbirds (NES), especially the Setup music sounding like the Map music in Thunderbirds. This is also true for the game's sequel.

We contacted Masaki Iwamoto and Hitoshi Saito, but due to time, they cannot remember any games they worked on. Junichi Saito's whereabouts are unknown.
