Year: 1991
Developer: Imagineering, Inc.

For other games in the series, see Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is an action-platformer developed by Imagineering and published by T*HQ. The game is based on the 1990 cartoon show of the same name, which itself was based on the film of the same name.

The player takes the role of Chad Finletter. The mad scientist Dr. Putrid T. Gangreen and his assistant Igor Smith have released living killer tomatoes in the city of San Zucchini in an attempt to take over the city, and then the world. It is up to Chad to put a stop to Gangreen's evil plans.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes has only five stages; the streets, the sewers, the factory, a silo in which Chad must defuse the tomato doomsday device, and a fifth bonus stage for watching the end credits.

The game was negatively received by critics for the short length of the game, as well as its poor control. This could be due to the game being developed by only three people.

Music

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes has only a handful of songs; not much for a game from 1990. However, the game does feature a faithful rendition of the original theme song by John De Bello.

The rest of the soundtrack has a somewhat scary atmosphere, written by Imagineering's lead composer, Mark Van Hecke. There are a total of ten songs, but only seven of them are used. The first unused song sounds like it was meant to be used as a death song, but when the player loses a life, the level's background music continues to play. The second unused song sounds like it was meant to be used during the fifth stage, but instead, one of the previous stage themes are used. The third is a version of the Monster Tomato/Rocket Launch theme that ends, so it may have been used if the rocket launches, but it appears as there's infinite time in the level, so the song goes unused.

The PAL version of the music is unique, in that it plays at approximately the same speed as the NTSC version, but still plays a half-step down.

To write the music, Mark used Dr. T KCS for the Atari ST, and converted his MIDI files to Stuart Ross' sound driver.

The game credits the theme song to John De Bello. The development credits can be seen after the game's completion.

Like most other games he was credited in, Mark is credited for music arrangement, even though he composed the game's soundtrack (with the exception to the theme song).
