Atomino (DOS)

Atomino is an action puzzle game, loosely inspired by a chemistry textbook and the pace of Tetris.
The game consists of a grid and a tube. Atoms queue up in the tube, and you must place the bottom one onto the grid. Each atom is surrounded by 1 to 4 electrons that automatically connect to adjacent atoms. When you close a chain of atoms, they dissolve and the game progresses. If a given huge number dissolves without leftovers, you can play an extra round: The grid fills up with atoms, and no atoms queue up till next chain. When the tube overflows, the game ends.
Atomino was created for the Commodore 64 and converted by the same three people to many PC configurations. At least two versions exist: Blue Byte's is exclusively in German, and Psygnosis' lets you choose between English, French and Italian after dismissing the credits.

Music
C64 and DOS musician Volker Strübing conceived the game and had attended punk concerts. Five background songs remind the gamer of major events: when the extra round is over, when the game is over, and whether you are entering the high scores afterwards.
The DOS arrangements are slightly faster, and the compositions were enhanced with several effects and a few different phrases. They also fade out or otherwise rest between loops. Altogether, they use 61 OPL2 instruments, 45 of which are unique to Strübing. Tracks 2 and 3 do not use channel 6, so sound effects can play there. On the PC Speaker, music is always off, and two additional sound effects step in for tracks 3 and 4.
The game program uses the MDI format, MIDI Play driver, and 16 instruments from STANDARD.BNK, all by Ad Lib. Somebody modified MIDI Play to take less CPU power and automatically loop every song. So, Strübing most likely arranged using a mouse in Visual Composer (version 1.5 or later), Instrument Maker, and ROL2MIDI (early version).
Recording
All songs were recorded from the game on a real Pentium 60 MHz with a Sound Blaster 16 CT1740. Depending on their length, they were played once or twice plus 10 seconds.
The VGMPF titles these songs after the DOS version's filenames.

The Ad Lib Music Synthesizer Card must be at port 388hex. It is automatically detected, but you can force it on or off by typing /A or /P at the command line. In the main menu, you can toggle music and sound effects separately.
