Arch Rivals: The Arcade Game is one of the three console ports of the arcade game Arch Rivals. The functions as a normal 2-on-2 basketball game, except you can attack your opponents who are either trying to steal the basketball from you or you can stop them from making the basket. The game's AI is less-than-perfect. To make up for this, the game is programmed so that 99% of the time whenever the opponent shoots the ball into the basket, it will make it and they will score, regardless how far away they were. However, it works more realistically for you, making it harder to score points, as the farther away from the hoop you are, the lesser chance you have of making a basket. The game is a 16-minute game divided into to four 4-minute periods. Later on in the game there will be trash lying about on the court that you need to avoid.

Arc Developments also programmed the Game Gear version of this game. It is interesting to note that the copyright screen lists a Master System version, but it never was released.

The game's soundtrack is ported from the arcade version which was composed by Dan Forden. Mark Cooksey of Ghosts 'N Goblins, Mighty Bomb Jack, and Paperboy (C64 versions) fame learned the music by ear and wrote MIDI files on Notator for the Atari ST which were converted to his Genesis sound driver. Mark also did the Game Gear version. This is the only port to contain a sound test, which can be accessed by pressing the C button on the player select screen.

(Source: Verification from composer; Game lacks credits.)

The game is one of the many by Arc Developments which fails to contain staff credits. The Game Gear version contains credits, but nothing for the audio category. We have contacted Mark who has verified working on the music conversion.
