Platform: Atari ST
Year: 1989
Developer: Box Office, Inc.

Alf the First Adventure is the only Alf game on an Atari computer. It is reminiscent of Pac-Man.

Alf's Melmacian friends have crashed on earth, and cats have hidden the spaceship parts. In 4 levels around Willie's garage, Alf must collect pizza to gain strength to catch 4 cats, then collect 2 parts, then the garage key, and put them one after another into the garage. When the dog catcher catches Alf, Willie bails him out. After 3 bails in one level, Willie puts Alf on a leash and the game ends. When Willie catches Alf, the level restarts from scratch; only the time is kept, and uniquely to the Atari ST port, all bails are forgotten. After 24 hours, the game ends.

This port has the best graphics, but the controls are unprofessionally programmed, confusing, almost unfair. Whenever you hold an arrow key, Alf's first step is slow. With a joystick, Alf is much faster, but either way, he can only turn sideways when perfectly aligned on the grid.

Music

All sound consists of high-pitched square waves with no kind of envelope, only clicks. The music instantly becomes a real pain in the ears, and once the first level starts, you will be relieved to be able to press the M key to turn it off. You can also press the S key to toggle the 4 jingles. They tell you when Alf runs into a pizza or garbage can, but when he runs into a cat, part or key, it merely shows on the bottom left and you may miss it. The sound effect upon pressing a key comes from the operating system. The game tries to turn it off upon start, but does it wrong.

Recording

This is one of few Atari ST games to support monochrome monitors. This also affects the sound, since the programmer synchronized it with the screen refresh. He did write code to speed up all sound by 40% on color monitors, but it is never called. All songs were recorded twice in Hatari v2.2.1.

  1. Color monitor at 60 Hz
  2. Monochrome monitor at 71 Hz
