Though Age of Empires was a late comer in the real-time strategy genre, the design team used the knowledge of its predecessors to create a very advanced game. It features all the typical aspects of RTS combat, but throws in many different means of victory as well as diplomatic pursuits. The game features an impressive array of buildings and units, as well as one of the best AIs of the day.

The music has a lovely ancient sound capitalizing on old instruments like drums and wood winds. For the creation of the music, a Boss DSS-330 synthesizer and an E-mu ESI-32 sampler were used and the mixing and editing was done in SoundForge. There were more songs produced for the game than what could fit on the CD, and as such some of the tracks that didn't fit on the CD were used in the separate MIDI track which was used if you didn't have the game CD inserted in your CD drive. The MIDI versions of the tracks were composed in Cakewalk. A few of these were slightly remixed and then eventually saw the light of the day as full CD quality on the Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome (W32) CD. Because the game uses CD audio you can actually just put the CD into your CD player to listen to it. Just skip the first track which is the program.
All song titles have been confirmed by Stephen Rippy. Both the CD and the MIDI songs have been recorded, with the 1st track being the CD quality music and the 2nd track the MIDI songs.

Game Rip
The soundtrack is CD audio on the game disc; it was ripped using CDex. The MIDI soundtrack is located in the .\Sound folder of the installed game and was recorded with Winamp's MIDI player v3.5. CD audio is too large to store in it's raw format, besides, the recording sounds the same as the rip and as such only MIDI files are included. The MIDI is type 1.
