ZIP is a compressed archive format created in 1989 by Phil Katz. The format originally used the Deflate algorithm, but now supports several different compression algorithms.
Most operating systems have built-in ZIP support and can compress and decompress them natively. However, these built-in versions are usually poorly-implemented leading to developers creating better independent programs.
Reason For Inclusion
Audio rip archives and software downloads in the VGMPF use the ZIP format.
