Touhou Koumakyou ~ the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. (東方紅魔郷 ~ the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.) is a doujin vertical-scrolling shooter released in 2002 at Comiket 62 for Windows, and is the sixth game in the Touhou Project series. It is the first game in the series released for Windows; all previous games were on the NEC PC-9801. It is also the first game developed by Junya Ota (commonly known as ZUN) under the name "Team Shanghai Alice" as opposed to "ZUN Soft". Improvements from Mystic Square include, other than the obvious sound and graphics quality upgrade, an automatic item collection feature that can be used when in Full Power Mode and a counter-bomb system that activates upon bombing at the moment of death. Even today, this game is considered to be one of the hardest games in the series to defeat.

Music

According to ZUN in the Afterword of the game:

By the way, how do you like the music? I intended to make it about three times as bright as usual, and since I haven't seen it in game music recently, I added some jazz fusion to it. I wanted to make it unusual and give it qualities of "This is what I think about when I think of game music!" yet I wanted to avoid the atmosphere that is so prevalent in game music a little bit.

If there's only one song people know from this game, it's "U.N. Owen was Her?". It is because of the song's use in the memetic video "McRoll'd" that a lot of Westerners were exposed to the series, and could be part of the reason the series is so popular in the West nowadays. Many other songs in the game have found themselves especially popular because of certain remixes as well, including Tomboyish Girl in Love and Septette for a Dead Princess.

The move to streamed music obviously saw a large leap forward in overall music quality, however this game is noteable for having lower quality instrumentation than later games, which can be understandable given the series' recent move off of FM synthesis.

While the game uses WAV files default, there is also a GS MIDI version of the soundtrack that can be enabled in the options menu.
