Split Personalities is a puzzle game developed by Ernieware and published by Domark, released in 1986. The game plays like a sliding puzzle, but with several twists and mechanics added. The player draws pieces of a 4x5 grid-based picture, and must put them all in the proper place to clear the level. The player gets pieces from the top-left block with an arrow on it. The player uses the image on the right side of the screen to determine where the piece is supposed to go. However, there are many obstacles in the way. Cracks in the wall will deflect the piece if it collides with it, and on the top, left, and bottom of the screen are doors that open and close, which the player can dispose of pieces. However, the doors can work against a player if they accidentally slide a piece out that they need. There are also "bonus blocks". The one to worry about most is the bomb, which either must be dispersed by throwing it out one of the doors, or colliding a water tap block with it. If not, the bomb explodes and the player loses a life. If a gas can block and match block collide, this will also cause an explosion, also costing the player a life. The player can combine other bonus blocks for more points, which can gain more lives. For example, combining a £ block with a $ block will result in a bonus. As the game progresses, so does the difficulty; there will be more cracks in the wall (some permanent and others temporary), and certain doors will stay open. In addition, hitting single pieces will cause them to move in the direction they're hit.

There are 10 levels in the game, with each portrait representing a famous person. These include Ronald Raegan, Sir Clive Sinclair (inventor of the ZX Spectrum), Humphrey Bogart, Margaret Thatcher, and Marilyn Monroe for the tenth and final stage.

Split Personalities was also released for the Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum, and was later ported to the Game Boy as Splitz, which featured different puzzles as well as bonus levels.

Music

Split Personalities has little to offer in the way of music because it's an early game. The title music is a little lengthy, spanning over a minute before looping. There is no in-game music, only jingles for when a major event happens (such as losing a life or completing a level). The music was written by legendary video game musician David Whittaker.

Ripping Commodore 64 music is an arduous process that is beyond the scope of this site. The music was recorded in JAM For Windows. Stage Clear 2 was recorded in the WinVICE emulator because it is missing from the SID rip.

Audio Devices

The game uses the SID of the Commodore 64, and uses David Whittaker's C64 sound driver.
