SonSon is a scrolling shooter based on the traditional Chinese Journey to the West story. You control SonSon the monkey boy (player 1) or TonTon the pig man (player 2). As the screen scrolls to the right, you can jump up and down platforms and walk back and forth along them. Aside from movement, your only other action is to shoot at the enemies.
SonSon was only released in Japan, but the rest of the world wasn't really missing much. The game is monotonous and dull. You never get any powerups or special abilities, one hit will always kill you, and you see every enemy in the game by the end of the first stage. Although each progressing stage gets slightly harder, it's basically feels like you're playing the first stage for about a half hour before the game ends.

SonSon's music comes from the music of the original arcade game, only slightly downgraded to work on the Famicom's weaker music chip. Ayako Mori, famous for her Ghosts 'N Goblins (ARC) soundtrack, wrote the original music. It's nothing too impressive, but at least the background music is tolerable and there are a few good fanfares. However, the engineering is a little wonky. When fanfares are played they don't pause the background music, so you hear the fanfare and the background music at the same time. This doesn't work very well with mono output.
The game lacks credits, however, Harumi Fujita said that Ayako Mori and Tamayo Kawamoto worked on arranging Ayako's compositions on the NES. Yoshihiro programmed the Capcom sound driver, so he has been listed as the sound programmer.

Ripping NES music is a very arduous process that is beyond the scope of this site.
