Atari pushed for their port of Pac-Man to be available for the 1981 Christmas season, and in doing so, left little time for the programmer to make a decent game. The concept of the game is similar to the arcade version; you control Pac-Man and move him around the maze eating pellets. Ghosts chase you down and try and get you, but if you eat one of the four power pellets you can eat them for a shot time. Sadly, the graphics and sound are terrible and make the game painful to play. The game maze is very different from the arcade and it never changes; Pac-Man's mouth animation is different and doesn't have vertical rotation; the ghosts have a heavy flicker, they're all the same color, and there's only three instead of four. Five million units went unsold. Along with other failures like E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (A26), the entire videogame industry took a crash in 1983.

Unfortunately for Pac-Man's porter, Tod Frye, Atari pressured him into fitting the game into a very small amount of code to avoid paying for a larger ROM cartridge, despite his assurance that using the larger ROM chip would let him make the game more like the arcade original. Atari also required him to finish for the 1981 Christmas season. This lead to an unpolished game that barely looks like the original . This led to many returns of the game and it, along with failures like E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (A26), helped contribute to the US video game industry crash of 1983.
