|
Pac-Man is a single-screen action game where you control Pac-Man who must eat up all the dots in a maze while avoiding ghosts that will kill you. However, if you eat one of the power pellets found in the four corners, you will temporarily be able to eat the ghosts. Once you eat all the dots in the maze, the maze will be repopulated and the game will get harder.
Unfortunately for Pac-Man's porter, Tod Frye, Atari pressured him into fitting the game into a very small amount of code to avoid paying for a larger ROM cartridge, despite his assurance that using the larger ROM chip would let him make the game more like the arcade original. Atari also required him to finish for the 1981 Christmas season. This lead to an unpolished game that barely looks like the original . This led to many returns of the game and it, along with failures like E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (A26), helped contribute to the US video game industry crash of 1983.

Music
Like the graphics, the audio from Pac-Man had no resemblance to the arcade game. The game's programmer, Tod Frye, created his own sound effects for the game. Although they're short and kind of annoying, they can be heard in several movies and television shows even to this day.
