Linux is a Unix-like operating system assembled under the model of free and open-source software development and distribution. Unlike proprietary operating systems like Windows or OSX, Linux can be run on a vast array of computer hardware. The Linux kernel was developed by Linus Torvalds and first released on October 5, 1991. It has been updated several times since then.

Versions

Because of its free and open-source model Linux has been modified hundreds of times into many distributions including Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, and many others. Some have been modified so much that they are considered independent operating systems, like Android OS and Chrome OS. Linux is even the core to many small appliances like DVR machines, smart TVs, and videogame consoles.

Because they vary so much and often require custom compilations, this web site will not focus on a specific distribution of Linux and will group them all to this single platform.

Music and Sound

Since Linux is a software platform, it doesn't have any native audio capabilities, but instead relies on third-party hardware support. Most consumer-level hardware tends to have a built-in audio device on the motherboard.
