Kirby's Avalanche is a two-player puzzle game developed by Compile and published by Nintendo. The game is actually a reskin of the popular Japanese puzzle game Puyo Puyo, also by Compile. The game was also released on the Sega Genesis as Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and was also ported to Windows under the name Qwirks. The goal of the game is simple; similar to Dr. Mario (NES), a piece shaped like blobs with eyes containing two different colors is given to the player and put down a well like in Tetris (NES). When four of the same color are lined up vertically or horizontally, the blobs will then blow up. Using certain techniques, the player can cause chain reactions where several different colored blobs are placed strategically so that they explode one after another. This creates garbage blobs that go to the opponent's board, making it easier to win. However, the opponent can also use the same techniques against you, so it is important to master the techniques to really have fun with the game, despite its simplicity.

In this game, Kirby is trying to get the Dream Fountain Cup in the Avalanche tournament. Along the way, he plays against familiar foes from previous Kirby games. This game draws many similarities from Tetris Attack (SNES), in that they are Americanized ports of Japanese puzzle games, converted to famous video game characters, they're puzzle games, and their soundtrack is remixed music from other games.

The game has a few different options to choose from. In Competition, this is the main story mode of the game where Kirby must face several characters seen in Kirby's Adventure (NES) and other games. Naturally, as the game progresses, the opponents get trickier and the pieces fall faster. Finally, Kirby (controlled by the player) must face King DeDeDe as the final boss of the game. There is also a Practice mode similar to the Competition mode where Kirby can face off against three easy opponents. There is also the 1P Vs. 2P mode where two human players can face off with each other.

The game received mostly positive reviews from critics. The game was praised for most of its aspects including first and foremost the addicting gameplay, as well as the colorful graphics, catchy music, and fluid controls.

Music

Kirby's Avalanche sports a fair amount of music, all of which are from the previous Kirby games at the time, mainly Kirby's Adventure (NES). The music was arranged by one of Compile's main sound designers, Akiyoshi Nagao, under his pseudonym Einosuke Nagao. According to him, the instruments were taken from Roland devices such as the TR-909, SH-101, and Juno-106. Akiyoshi said he originally wrote each song in the MIDI format, but as Compile's SNES sound driver (by Nobuaki Yamasaki) didn't support MIDI files, he had to enter the music by hand in Music Macro Language.

Because of the drums being taken from Roland drum machines, the music sounds like dance/techno remixes of the original themes, giving them a bouncy and catchy feel.
