Kris' Music System is a music format named after its creator Kris Hatlelid of Distinctive Software. Like MID files, the songs are event-based, however the actual notation is quite different to MIDI. For example MIDI uses note-on and note-off events, while KMS only has note-on events which include a value for the note duration. Through external VCE instrument banks, the songs can be played back on AdLib, Roland MT-32, Tandy 3 Voice and PC Speaker devices. This format was also used for his NES, Genesis, Amiga, and Atari music.

Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge (DOS) and some other games uses the PKM extension for the music files which appears to be a compressed KMS file.

The format doesn't store instruments, but it links to the external instrument files in VCE format, with a different instrument file for each audio device. Compressed instruments are with PVC extension.

Players

There currently aren't any players available for the KMS Format.
