Elvira is a series of games based on the character played by actress Cassandra Peterson.

Personal Nightmare

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark

Elvira inherits Killbragant Castle, and wants to turn it into a tourist location. However, in doing this, she has accidentally awakened an old ancestor Emelda, who attempts to be revived. Elvira hires an unnamed male protagonist who is controlled by the player. The protagonist must go throughout the castle looking for 6 keys which unlock a box with an item to stop Emelda. The player must collect several items they find as ingredients for spells for Elvira to make for the player to use.

The game was noted for its gory death scenes. When the player dies, they are given a headshot of what has happened to the protagonist to cause their death. For example, there is a bird that can literally claw the protagonist's eyes out, as well as a monster the bludgeons the protagonist to death with a boulder, in which the headshot shows the protagonist's head caved in with blood.

This was the only game in the series to get a release in Japan on the PC-9801.

Elvira: The Arcade Game

Elvira II: The Jaws of Cerberus

Elvira wants to make a horror movie at her film studio, but the studio was made on haunted grounds, and subsequently ends up summoning Cerberus who kidnaps her. The player assumes control of an unnamed protagonist, who appears to be different than the one in the first game. Similar to the first game, the player must pick up various items to make spells. However, because Elvira is kidnapped and cannot assist the player, the player has an ingredient book telling the player what ingredients are required for each spell. Once the player gets the proper ingredients, they will be able to use the spell permanently, but must be cautious of their Magic Power which takes time to recharge. The goal of the game is to defeat Cerberus and rescue Elvira. Periodically, Elvira can teleport to the player and give them tips to proceed in the game.

Like the first game, there are gory headshots of the player that are seen when the player dies.

WaxWorks

This game does not feature Elvira, nor the protagonists from either game, but was developed by the same company and uses the same game engine. In WaxWorks, your uncle has recently passed away and left you his wax museum in his will. Even worse, your twin brother Alex has gone missing. Your uncle's servant gives you a crystal ball that allows you to communicate with your deceased uncle. Your uncle Boris tells you that you must go back in time via his wax museum in order to prevent a curse that was placed on your family many years ago by a witch. The witch placed a curse that made one half of twins in every generation in your family evil. Your character must stop his evil ancestors in the waxworks such as Jack the Ripper, Vladimir, the High Priest of Anubis, and a giant plant monster that your ancestor transformed into.

Note: Though this game has nothing to do with the Elvira games, it was included in Elvira's Horror Pack officially. Therefore, it is counted part of the series.
