Dransik, later known as Dransik Classic is an MMO RPG made as an homage to Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny (C64), and would go on to be the basis of Ashen Empires (W32).

You play a hero in a the land of Dransik, and you must fight monsters, complete quests, and perform various tasks in order to become more powerful to help King Lotor defeat the denizens of the evil Talazar.

When Ashen Empires was released, Dransik was renamed Dransik Classic, and after a year was taken offline in 2004. Once Iron Will Games purchased Ashen Empires and Dransik, Dransik Classic was made available again on April 5, 2006, and is still available free to play.

The music of Dransik was composed by Paavo Härkönen and incorporated into the game in 2001; it combines Old World themes with modern instruments to yield a timbre common among high fantasy media. Songs are setup to play in different areas of the game. There are several songs designed for towns, dungeons, graveyards, castles, and traveling through the wilderness.

The song titles are derived from the game's data files, and are short and to the point: Church, Evil - 5, Town - 3, Travel - 2, etc. A couple of the MIDI files list slightly different titles in the meta data, but the data file's titles more accurately describe how the songs are used in the game, so they are preferred. For example, "Evil - 4" is called "Approach" in the meta data, but it is not used in the game when enemies approach, but rather as the backdrop of an evil undead battleground.

Since the game allows the player to move about the map without any planned course, the player may hear the game's songs in varied orders. The track order used for the music is setup to simulate various quests in the game.

Härkönen also recorded arranged versions of the music with high-quality synthesizers and made the songs available on his web site, which is now offline. They are archived here.

(Info)

The Type-1 MIDI music files are located in the .\Dransik\Data\Data04 file. The header of the file contains the file offsets, file names, and internal titles.

The songs were recorded using Nullsoft's MIDI Player v3.55 in Winamp outputting to the Microsoft DirectMusic MIDI synthesizer.

Audio Devices

Dransik just uses your default MIDI synthesizer to play the music, which, for most people, is Microsoft's DirectMusic MIDI synthesizer.
