Clever & Smart (AST)
|Clever & Smart|
Clever & Smart is an arcade adventure based on the Spanish comic series Mortadelo y Filemón. The comics were so popular in Germany that a German publisher had the blessing to design this first video game. It was not well thought out, as all localizations kept the German title and character names. The gameplay got a bit of a cult following due to the original and worthy gimmicks, and the completely obscure aim.
The 16-bit versions look best and add a hidden obstacle race, but play and read worst. The protagonists move slower than everything else and the car can appear right nearby, making the game downright unfair. And guess what "Out of agents" is supposed to mean? "You are not allowed to enter the house."
The only music plays to the title screen. Unlike the other versions, the Atari ST game plays the song once and then continues by itself. If you press a key before, it stops reacting to keys and you have to reboot. The sound effects do their job: You hear the bomb tick (though the explosion sounds more like a clap), and when you knock on a wall, dangerous pipes are louder.
The song was recorded from the first occurrence of the title screen in Hatari v2.1.0.
