Captain Planet and the Planeteers is a video game released for various platforms in the early 1990s, loosely based on the environmentalist animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers and developed Mindscape Inc. Three different versions were developed to suit three different platform capabilities, each with a markedly different gameplay. The Amiga/Atari ST version was released in 1991, as was the ZX Spectrum/Amstrad CPC version, while the Nintendo Entertainment System version was released in 1992.

The game was the second of two titles that was developed entirely by Gray Matter for the NES (the first one was Dirty Harry (NES), although Gray's previous titles Infiltrator II and Road Raider were converted to the NES by Eastridge Technology (as "Infiltrator" and "Mad Max" respectively), though they were credited as Chris Gray Enterprises. The NES version of the game has five levels, each of which are divided into two different types of stages. The first stage involves controlling the international teen heroes (Planeteers) flying their Eco-Jet to an enemy fortress, while trying to avoid the instant death that occurs by touching any of the scenery or getting hit by the various projectiles or birds. The second stage involves controlling Captain Planet himself as he fights his way to an ecovillain from the TV series.

The NES version features levels set in the Yellowstone National Park, the Atlantic Ocean, Africa and Antarctica.

Music

The game's music was all done by Peter Stone of The Chessmaster and Wayne's World fame. Stone would write the music in Dr. T's KCS for Atari ST and Nick Eastridge arranged the music in assembly. Stone did a good job composing the game's music, though the theme music from the TV show is absent.

Just like Dirty Harry (NES), the game also credits Nick Eastridge in the Special Thanks credits. Looking at the code, it is revealed that the game uses his sound driver. Additionally it used the same sound driver variation that was used in Orb-3D (NES) and Battleship (NES).

The game also features an unused song. It was probably meant for the earlier Stage Clear theme, but the final Stage Clear theme is different from the one they were released.
